Movie Review: 3 Oscar Nominees

I had planned to review these in advance of the Oscars last week but life got in the way. Here are my short reviews of 3 Oscar Nominated movies.

Three Bilboards outside Ebbing Missouri

This movie stars Frances McDormand as a mother who’s daughters murder remains unsolved. She uses three billboards on the way into her town, and some strong language,  to call out the Sheriff in the local police department.

Three Billboards… includes an all star cast with Woody Harrellson as Chief Woloughby, the man targeted by the signs, and  Sam Rockwell as his slightly unhinged colleague. The performances here were captivating by all concerned and the balance of humour after some tension was brilliant.

**Slight Spoiler following**

I would recommend this film as it kept my attention throughout, wanting this mothers crusade to bring results. Great movie, although it just ends.

Rating: 4/5 Stars

Lady Bird

Lady Bird chronicles a high school seniors relationship with her strong willed mother through the course of her final year of high school. Staring Saoirse Ronan as the teenager who wants to live through something and get out of her town  and Laurie Metcalf as the stubborn, opnionated mother who is financially trying to keep her head above water.

Again I enjoyed this film. Saoirse Ronan was actually great in it and plays and angsty teenager well. I love Laurie Metcalf so it was great to see her in this role,

Another one I’d recommend although it just ends too.

Rating: 4/5 Stars

I, Tonya

American Skating star Tonya Harding (Margot Robbie) overcomes multiple set backs, class limitations and and accusations and becomes the first American woman to complete a triple axel during a figure skating competition.

This was my favourite of the three movies. I was fully invested in the story. Being from Ireland, I had never heard of any of the scandal attached to Tonya Harding or knew much about her before seeing this movie. It had be entertained and grabbed my attention form beginning to end. This gets my top choice!
